I hate this theme. Mostly. There are a few things about it I like but overall, meh. But what can I do? I hate the default themes as well. Well how about the WordPress Themes Directory that you can click on from inside the WordPress console? It has 954 themes as of this writing. That should help right? Uh… no. Have you looked at that page? They have taken usability to a whole new low.
954 themes and no easy way to get to them. Unless you want one of the ten featured themes on the page or want to hunt through the miscellaneous popular themes on the side, there is no way to find the others. OH SURE, there’s that big search bar at the top but um… what exactly am I searching for? Here’s a hint: try typing “A theme I would like” into that search field and see what it comes back with. Is that a silly example? Yes it is, but what should I search for? I’m sure there are keywords or tags or something but maybe it could give me some hints.
I like WordPress. I really do. It’s a thousand times better than the cybrblog system I cobbled together many years ago on this same domain. I really like how they keep expanding the features too. But one complaint I have about the standard installation is those default themes. WordPress has offered those same two Default and Classic themes forever. Fine. But could they at least update them to work with the new versions of WordPress and the new features? No, the built-in themes don’t have to have the best features and prettiest presentations but couldn’t they at the very least show off what WordPress can do natively?
For example, a few revisions ago WordPress added in-line or nested comments. Great! However presenting those in that fashion is controlled by the theme you are using. I still haven’t seen a theme that integrates that feature although to be honest I haven’t tried many themes. Because they are unreasonably difficult to browse. Oh wait, there’s no browse feature on the WordPress Themes Directory either! Not much of a directory if you can’t browse it. Seriously though, the default theme should accomodate every new feature built in to WordPress. Throw us a bone here.
Well, it looks like the web hosting move was fairly smooth. Much easier than I had thought it would be. I do think I forgot a few things on the old server and I didn’t note my old IP address… dumb. I’m hoping Yoshi still has that.
We had our fifth of six baby classes last night. They show the nastiest crap in the videos and pictures in that class. To hell with providing condoms or teaching sex education in our schools. Just show all of them these videos. They’ll never want to have babies. Ever.
Tomorrow evening we have our final walk-through of the house to see if everything that we requested has been completed before we close on Friday. Friday we put ourselves in enough debt to keep us shackled to St. Louis for the rest of our lives. Wonderful. Oh well, that’s the way it goes. Interest rates are higher now than when moved back to the States. The housing market sucks. To all of you who told us what a great time it would be to come back home because the car market and housing market were so great: YOU WERE WRONG. Unless of course you are in the market for a full size pickup truck and a “remodeler’s dream home”.
But hopefully we will be getting settled soon. Our sea shipment from Hong Kong will be delivered on Saturday and then our storage items will arrive on Monday morning. We need to get our utiliites sorted and get internet access in the house. It’s going to be crazy. And the baby is due any time now….
Just want to let everyone know that I’ll be switching over the DNS for the following web sites to match their new hosting server:
A Little Scary
Cat and Muse
My friend Yoshi is kicking me off his servers so I had to go get a new hosting package. The data looks like it’s all transferred as of yesterday but I can’t really test it till I get the domains pointing to the new locations.
The change will probably be kicked off overnight tonight. If anyone sees anything not working, please let me know.
Looks like the DNS changes are underway. I had to repost today’s comic and this post. Yay! So far so good.
Yoshi over at Hello! Yoshi is having a contest this week which you should definitely check out. He’s been planning a contest for the Blogathon ever since the last Blogathon, but they have decided to cancel it this year. So what is Yoshi to do with his fabulous prizes that he bought for this event? He has two brand new MP3 players just itching to be given away. That’s the reason for the seemingly random contest.
The rules are simple and you only have till this coming Sunday to enter. So hurry up and head over to enter the contest today!
Do you like contests? I’m betting most people would answer yes. Even if I know I have no chance of winning or would prefer I not win (which would be wierd), my competitive spirit keeps me coming back for more. In the realm of the internet and blogging I’ve seen lots of different contests: photo contests, writing contests, guessing game contests, comment contests, etc and I’m sure there’s a million others out there I haven’t heard of or seen before.
So my question to you is: What is the best contest you have ever entered and why?
