The world we live in and life in general

So much happens on a day to day basis to me and everyone else that there is no possible way to for everyone to keep everyone posted on the goings-ons and what-nots of their lives at all times.  It’s just not possible.  So we share small samplings of our lives on bliggity blogs and our face-spaces and we move on.  Years ago we didn’t even do that much.

Kira and Michelle have both been sick for a little over a week now.  So far, I have been very lucky to not yet get sick.  The wife went through antibiotics and had no result so more than likely she has viral bronchitis just like our poor baby girl.  Kira has to breath in medicine in vapor form from a mask hooked to a loud machine.  She was basically tolerant of the experience at first but I think her patience is getting thin for that routine.  Not sure how much longer she needs that treatment but hopefully not too long.  She seems to be a bit better.

Kira continues to amaze me with her progress and ability.  Michelle continues to amaze me in taking care of Kira every day and the house and everything else.  I know she thinks I don’t appreciate her and the hard work she does every day but I do.  I really do.  I am very proud of both of them.  I really don’t think that Kira would be so well adjusted and amazingly advanced if it weren’t for Michelle being with her every day and working with her and taking care of her.

We have been getting the run-around with Graebel… again.  You may remember we had issues with them back in October of last year.  Well, to one extent or another we have had continual issues since then as well.  Now for the past few months we have been dealing with trying to get our insured items covered and repaired.  Some things have worked out and many things haven’t but nothing has gone smoothly.  You can read up on the current problems over at the wife’s site.  I have given up dealing with them and turned them over to her to deal with.  I’m betting they are now wishing that they would have just worked things out with me.  If we ever decide to move to a new city again with my current employer I will do everything I can to NOT use Graebel for that or any other move.

I’ve been busy working on a few different projects at work.  I’m working on getting some new security software rolled out to all of our computers (actually our Altiris guy is doing all the work) and I’m in the final stages of getting ready for a big office integration in New York City.  I do not look forward to being away from the wife and our little girl while working on that project and I’m sure Michelle isn’t looking forward to it either.  But I don’t have to travel too often and I’m still employed so I do what I have to do.

We were planning on migrating from Microsoft Exchange 2003 to the new Exchange 2007 and I’ve been working on the testing and planning of that for a few months.  However, now that Microsoft is releasing the next version (2010) earlier than expected, and faster than any other major revision cycle in history for that product, we are now on hold.  The idea is that we will now skip Exchange 2007 and go directly to 2010.  OK cool.  We can do that.

I have been working on some new comics for A Little Scary in my “spare” time but I missed my re-launch date of June 1st already.  I’m hoping to get a couple done soon.  Here’s hoping.  I don’t want to start up again without at least a small buffer or I’ll just end up getting discouraged again when a deadline comes and goes with no update.

Bonus points if you can tell me where I got the title of this post.

When Child Porn Laws Go Bad

You are a criminal.  You may not have known that but if you are fairly media savvy then most likely you are a criminal based on this conviction of a comic book collector.

Here’s the quick summary: a man who is a prolific collector of Japanese manga (comics) was found guilty of child pornography because of artwork in a series of manga that he was importing depicting depraved sex acts with children.  According to the article, this is a man who collected ALL types of manga and not just this style which puts him in the realm of what should have been considered an art collector.  He faces up to 15 years in jail.

So here’s the problem – this is a victimless crime.  There is no one who has been hurt… no one who has been wronged…  no one to be compensated.  These are drawings of fictional characters.  And the law has been left purposely vague (although less vague than the first iteration) so that it can cover things it was never meant to cover.  So now a comic collector is being put in jail and resources that could have been used to catch and prosecute real child pornographers has been wasted.

Welcome to the new world that allows for an idea to be illegal.  The most common anology to this is that if we play a video game that has us kill a virtual person are we then considered a murderer?  Sounds far-fetched doesn’t it? Now think about every school shooting over the past few years and how many times video games were blamed as influencers of the mentally flawed people who commited these crimes.

So where does the line get drawn?  Do we need to burn every copy of Lolita?  Should fans of Dakota Fanning get thrown in jail for watching Hounddog?  I guess we can’t make any more gang movies… ya know, unless no one dies of unnatural causes in them.  Slumdog Millionaire should have been X-rated based on this kind of thinking (oh wait, everyone loved it and it won awards).

What’s your opinion? (please read the article or be familiar with the case before venting)

Halloween Eve

To say that me and Muse have been busy would be a grand understatement.

On Friday we closed on our new house.  Of course there were difficulties and things not taken care of as needed so it took forever.  Our closing went smoothly but the seller’s did not.  Sucks to be them… they should have gotten a better agent.  Ours is great.  Since we had nothing in the new house though we went back and stayed at my Mom’s where we had been.

On Saturday our sea shipment from Hong Kong arrived.  That actually went pretty smooth.  One of our couches got ripped somewhere along the way though.  That sucks.  Right in the front middle.  Good thing it’s insured.  We had lots of family and friends over to help with all the miscellaneous things that needed to be done.  It’s an exhausting process but it was OK.  Our cats were returned to us finally so they got locked in a bedroom while people worked.

On Sunday… I don’t really remember Sunday.  There may have been pancakes involved.  I think we shopped until we couldn’t shop anymore.  Just thinking about the amount of money that we have spent over the past few weeks makes my wallet hurt.

On Monday all hell broke loose.  Muse had an early doctor’s appointment and would be back to the house later in the morning to meet with the movers.  The movers were scheduled to arrive at 10:30am.  I double confirmed that time.  So I get a call on my mobile at 8:55am from the movers asking where we were and should they take the stuff back and re-schedule.  I’m sitting at work at that point and Muse was already at the doctor’s office.

After a confused conversation, Muse ends up leaving the doctor’s to meet them.  I get a call later that the movers are being uncooperative and that one of the cats is missing.  I leave work early and race home.  Tons of stuff gets moved in. A few more broken items.  No one knows anything about the pool table being reassembled.  More chaos.  I end up working from home on a cellular modem which is fairly slow.  Ugh.

Bottom line is that we are now moved in and we have lots of unpacking to do.  Of course Muse is having contractions and can have the baby at any time at this point.  So we shall see what gets done.

And of course in the midst of all that I’ve been furiously working on new comics.  I made the decision to do five new comics for A Little Scary this week in celebration of Halloween.  It was a good decision but I’ve been working my butt off to get it done.  The first four comics are posted now.  Tomorrow’s comic is done and waiting to post.  But I would just read the first four if I were you.  You really don’t want to see what’s in that last comic.  Trust me.

Comic update

On Monday, A Little Scary posted comic number 60.  Not a bad mile marker if I do say so myself.  At the end of the month I am shooting for another goal… well, two goals actually.

The first is that the last week of October will feature three comics on Monday, Wednesday and Friday to celebrate Halloween.  This is not going to be the new schedule for ALS but it is something I’ve been wanting to try to see if I can update on a more demanding schedule.  I think I can but with moving into a new house and our first baby due to be born around that same time I don’t want to make any commitments I can’t honor.

The second goal is a bit trickier.  ALS has, for the most part, been a pretty tame comic and I want to keep it that way.  There’ve been some bizarre or gross things from time to time because that’s just the kind of person I am.  I have never felt like I was above a fart or poop joke or anything like that.  I relish in the fact that the characters are who I want them to be and they have no shame in that.  And this brings me to that second goal.  The final comic of October will be posted on Halloween and it will be the most disturbing comic yet.  It’s bad enough that it may polarize my meager audience and I may lose a few readers over it.  I hope not, but with how people are nowadays you have to assume that someone will be offended.  I’m hoping people will be shocked but enjoy it for what it is.  I won’t say anything more about it than that.  Even if I lose every single reader over the comic it will have been worth it.  Because I think it’s funny and I am not ashamed of that.

That being said, make sure you tune in to A Little Scary today because I think today’s comic is particularly funny.  And if you are worried about your delicate sensibilities… well… maybe you should just skip the comic on Halloween.  You have been warned.
