Mutant Shrimp

I have no idea what these are really called in English and I certainly can’t remember what they’re called in Cantonese.  But they are edible and available in the seafood and wet markets in Hong Kong.  Here they are for your amusement.  Mutant shrimp.

    I’m not eating that.

They look really wrong. Scary even but I suppose I’d say the same thing if I saw a shrimp for the first time again. I guess they must be really tasty! Have you tried them? I’d be scared to eat them.

They look freakish. I’m sure I’ll see them on an episode of Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel.

Up close they look like a mix up of a crayfish, a prawn and a praying mantis. Instead of front claws they have folding scythe-like arms like a mantis.

I’ve never had one that I am aware of but you never really know for sure here.

Cybr, your last comment really summed up what I was thinking about them!
