The time may be close
The time for buying a new computer to replace my outdated and seemingly dying of old age PC may be closer than I had thought. Based on this article, it seems that the newest king of video cards may be released as early as next month. And if the projected pricing in this article holds true then that is a freaking bargain compared to the current high end cards.
Based on the newest iteration of DirectX 10.1, this new NVidia 9800GX2 should be more than enough muscle to power all the games I’ve been waiting to buy. Of course I’ll have to wait and see just how much it actually retails for and how it stacks up against AMD/ATI’s new DX10.1 cards. Currently the new batch of Radeon cards are good but no match for NVidia’s last iteration of 8800 series cards.
Then all I need to do is research new motherboards and RAM and cases and power supplies and hard drives and….

I haven’t yet found a game that I truly want that will make me want to upgrade my video since Oblivion. I haven’t been keeping up on the newest games though, so who knows. I need to read up.
Well considering my old beast is still running a 6800GT, I can barely run Oblivion. So there’s a start. I’ve had F.E.A.R. for two years now and still can’t play it.
For new games there’s Crysis (which realistically no hardware can truly run properly yet) at the top of my graphical wish list. And Supreme Commander would also be in that same category. Plus there’s Hellgate: London, Call of Duty 4, The Witcher and possibly The Club. Of course Spore will come out someday and I’d like to be able to play that in all it’s graphical glory. And then there’s World in Conflict and Unreal Tournament 3 and Huxley and… well, I think you get the idea.
Did you ever figure out what part of your computer was smoking? You might want to replace that part first :).
I like the mini-itx form factor projects at mini-itx.com, you should consider doing one of those.
Also, my url has changed from theonymous.com to revmatt.com.
And furthermore, Ars just published their System Guide 2008 conveniently timed for you to consider. http://arstechnica.com/guides/buyer/guide-200801.ars
