Entering time
Today is Monday, January 14th. A day that will live in infamy. The day that an entire IT department has to change the way it’s played the game for decades.
Today, we start doing time entry.
Yeah it’s going to be a pain in the ass accounting for our time every day. A lot of people are probably whining their asses off back at the home office and in other locations as well. And you know what? Surprisingly, I’m not one of those people. I expected this sort of thing and I actually knew about the change quite a while before everyone else did. That’s because I was supposed to be the only one in the group doing time entry as a kind of trial run for what was to come. And I was OK with that because I was also the first person in our group to become billable. But somewhere that seems to have fallen apart and now everyone is starting at the same time. No difference to me.
However, I haven’t seen exactly how to do the time entry yet or been given any indications how it will all work exactly. I assume there will be some sort of e-mail distribution later tonight when the United States wakes up to their Monday morning. In the meantime, I guess I’d better write a note or two showing what I’ve been up to today.
I wonder how I’ll enter “Unpacking boxes” and “Looking for lost power cables” or “Throwing away crap that should have been thrown away prior to the move.” I’d ask ‘them’ but they’d probably make a time entry code for those activities and make me use them….

Oddly, my company just instituted time tracking for IT as well. We are also still trying to figure out exactly how this will work out. We’ll have to compare notes as well go to find the best way without making our jobs more about the time entry and less about the “support”.

Welcome to the world I lived for a decade. I worked at PR firms and had to enter time for every little thing. I am now at my first job where I don’t have to do that. I’m so over the time thing. Good luck.
